San Diego Junior Theatre’s Second Season of Shows

Below are the shows produced during its second season by the Junior Theater Wing of the San Diego Community Theater.
San Diego State College faculty member E. Kingsley Povenmire directed the season’s opening production, Mary Poppins, at the Old Globe Theatre.
Black Bart, a melodrama by local playwright Melcena Burns Denny was performed at the Puppet Theatre in the newly re-opened Palisades Building in Balboa Park. The building had been taken over by the navy during World War II, and had just been re-opened in 1950.
Junior Theater Wing summer workshop classes were taught by San Diego State College graduate and Old Globe actress Sadie Lou Tieri. “Actor’s companies” made up of 100 students from the Junior Theater Wing’s six-week summer workshop toured city playgrounds with two shows by local San Diego playwrights. Flexible scenery units designed by Richard Comstock were transported from venue-to-venue by truck. The community outreach program was jointly produced by the San Diego Community Theater and the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department.
